“Darren!” She shouted as he practically raced across the lot.

He was moving far quicker than she could without running, and he looked enough like an idiot for the both of them. She watched, just out of reach, as he jerked open the car door and threw himself inside.

Jogging the rest of the way she opened the door and got in.

“Are you done being an idiot?” She hadn’t meant to growl the words, but that hadn’t stopped it from happening.

He looked at her then, eyes red but not filled with tears. “I don’t know who I am without the Navy, Sophie.”

She put her hand over his on the center console and he jerked his back. It stung, but she tried to remember this was about him, not her.

“I’ll be here for you. Every step of the way. We will get you through you this, Darren. I don’t care that we’ve only been back together a few months. I know that I want you and I will not let you face this alone.”

“You don’t have a choice.” His words were monotone.

“Excuse me?”

“I don’t know who I’m supposed to be without the Navy. I don’t need you to see me like that.”

She could tell he was lying. “Or you don’t need the reminder of what you lost around all the time?”

He said nothing, didn’t even bother to look away.

“You’re an asshole Darren Sinclair. An absolute asshole.”

“I’ll take you home,” he whispered as he put his seatbelt on and put the car in drive.
